The Employees' Provident Fund Organization, a statutory body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Govt. of India, is charged with the responsibility of extending social security cover by way of providing provident fund, pension and insurance benefits to the employees and workers engaged in factories and other establishments specified in the EPF & MP Act, 1952 and / or notified by the government.
Three schemes have been framed under the Act namely the Employees' Provident Funds Scheme, 1952, Employees' Pension Scheme, 1995(which superseded the erstwhile Employees' Family Pension Scheme, 1971) and the Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme, 1976.
At present there are 40 Regional Offices and 83 Sub-Regional Offices functioning at various places throughout the country to implement the provisions of the Act and to extend the social security benefits in accordance with the provisions of the three schemes framed under the Act.
The act at present extends to 187 no. of industries and other class of establishments.
